Train the Trainer

Introduction

Your staff may be about to deliver in-house training. That's great - they will usually have a strong knowledge of the topic, the business priorities and people's expectations and needs.

However your staff may need to develop their training skills - how to capture the trainee's enthusiasm, how to handle "difficult" trainees and how to measure the effectiveness of the training. This practical course will give your staff these skills and more.

It is suitable for those who are new to training and those with some experience who want to polish their performance.

ILM Approval

This two day course is approved by the Institute of Leadership and Management. The ILM are the largest UK provider of management awards and qualifications and are part of the City and Guilds group.

On attending the course delegates can receive an ILM Certificate and one year’s study membership to the ILM. There is a small additional fee of £45.00 + VAT per delegate for this option.

We provide this course either as in-company course or a public course.

Course Objectives

  • Provide a full coverage of important training skills.
  • Ensure training is tailored to your business, and meets personal goals.
  • Help your staff to develop the self-confidence and presence needed to get results.

Course Aims

Delegates will learn :

  • How to define objectives that meet both business and trainee needs
  • How to recognise the different learning styles of trainees and adapt their training accordingly.
  • How to plan and design training to gain the trainee's commitment and enthusiasm.
  • How to identify and prevent a problem before it develops.
  • How to act assertively but not aggressively with challenging trainees.
  • How to check that their training is really effective and that learning has occured.

Course Structure

This workshop is run as an interactive session with plenty of opportunity for delegates to discuss and learn how to handle a range of training challenges.

Delegates will also have the opportunity to plan a training session and practise their skills in delivering training.

Delegates are asked to bring details of training they either deliver now or plan to deliver. This helps ensure that the training can more easily be applied after the course.

Course Schedule

Day 1 - Session 1 - Planning Your Course

The course helps delegates focus on why the training is important for the individual, the team and the business. It is also important to bring out any ‘objections’ to the training - otherwise they can hinder the learning process.

Topics include:

  • “Smart” course objectives
  • Knowing the audience in advance
  • Getting the training mix right - persuasion, information and instruction
  • Pre-Course reading
  • Pre-course questionnaires

Course exercise:

our trainers will help your staff develop a training plan for part or all of a course they might deliver in the workplace.

Day 1 - Session  2 - Preparing Your Course

This session introduces the different styles that we all adopt when in a learning environment. These are in two groups - sensory and psychological.

Studies of sensory styles show some of us have a natural preference to learn visually, others learn by physically doing something, and others learn by listening. Psychological styles are more subtle but just as important.

The course covers these styles in depth. Tests in the course will allow delegates to understand their own individual learning styles. This is very important as trainers tend to train in a way that suits their own style, rather than that of the delegates/ trainees.

Topics include:

  • Sensory Learning Styles (Visual, Auditory, Read/Write, Kinaesthetic)
  • Psychological Learning Styles - Activist, Reflector, Theorist, Pragmatist
  • Matching training methods to Learning Styles
  • Seven important design principles to follow
  • Handling objections
  • Attention span
  • Training resources - visual aids, venue and your time
  • Providing variety in training
  • Material for delegates - what to include
  • Preparing clear instructions

Course exercises include:

  • Practicing providing information innovativly
  • Preparing and testing instructions to carry out a particular task

Day 2 - Session 3 - On The Day - Managing interaction on the course

This section will help your staff identify and develop an individual style that is effective. Many new trainers are understandably nervous of training - surveys have shown that standing up in front of a group of people is one of the most stressful activities a person can encounter.

By helping delegates concentrate on their trainees and not themselves, this fear can be reduced.

This module looks at responding to delegates and dealing with questions, even if the answer is not known.

Our trainers will also look at specific techniques for building rapport with delegates and managing any challenging or ‘difficult’ behaviour.

Topics include:

  • Setting the scene
  • Motivating learners
  • Body language - ”Not interested”, interested and aggressive
  • How delegates can manage their own behaviour, and that of the trainees'
  • Showing empathy

Course exercises:

  • Delegates will design and rehearse their own course introduction.
  • Our trainers will help your staff plan strategies to handle objections from their trainees, and then test these strategies out in reality.

Day 2 Session 4 - Ending your course

It is important that any training finishes on a high note. This is good for the trainer and the delegates!

Trainees need to be clear on what they have learned and how they will apply it.  This module helps delegates ensure this is the case for their training.

Topics include:

  • Summarising what has been learned
  • Applying what has been learned
  • Gaining constructive feedback
  • Recording what has been learned
  • Supporting continued learning after the course

Technology/IT Issues

There are some issues that are unique to IT training. Our trainers will cover these specifically on request.

Topics include:

  • Fear of technology
  • Keyboard abuse
  • Dislike of a new system (“I preferred the old system”, “I wasn’t involved”) etc.
  • Handling equipment failures
  • Ensuring learners know how to use particular system facilities, but aslo when to use those facilities

After the course

Each delegate is entitled to six months free telephone and email support after the course.

We also send out an electronic copy of the flip chart notes produced during the course. We will send this out by email approximately two weeks after the course.
